서정적 장면과 파스텔톤 화면, 부드럽고 강렬한 재즈 음악을 가진 팝 뮤지컬 영화이지만, 젊은 연인들의 갈등을 너무 아름답게 꾸미지도 않은 의미 있는 영화입니다.
맘마미아 보다는 오페라의 유령 쪽에 더 가까운 영화입니다. 젊은 날의 실패와 이별, 모든 장면이 아름다움으로 가득한 영화입니다.
재미 삼아 짧은 한마디 - 위플래시에 나온 악당 음악 선생님은 여기서 재즈를 미워하는 나쁜 레스토랑 사장님으로 나옵니다.

라라랜드(La La land)의 웹스터 사전 정의는 a euphoric dreamlike mental state detached from the harsher realities of life. 입니다. 항상 드는 생각이지만, 영영 사전 뜻을 이해하는 정도 된다면 영어 공부를 왜 할까요? 영영 사전의 제작 목적은 원어민들을 위해 만들었기에 원어민이 사용해야 합니다.
네이버 사전에서는 '꿈의 나라, 비현실적인 세계 ((특히, 영화·TV 산업과 연관 지어 Los Angeles, Hollywood, 남캘리포니아를 가리킴))'이라고 합니다. 스크립트 46번에 나오는 pipe dream의 의미를 갖고 있습니다.
영화가 제작된 곳 할리우드가 LA에 있고, 이 영화 주제도 환상과 연결되고, 라라랜드라는 발음도 무척 경쾌합니다.
스크립트 1번 insanity와 2번 lunacy를 외우는 미아(배우 : 엠마 스톤)를 보면서, 원어민도 insanity와 lunacy 차이를 구분하기 어려워하는 장면이 나옵니다. 이런 모습을 보면, 왜 우리가 영어를 배울 때, 미묘한 차이점을 굳이 강조해서 가르치는지 납득이 잘 안됩니다. 원어민도 구분이 안되는 차이를 영어 대화를 거의 못하는 외국인이 알고 있다면 무슨 의미가 있을까요? 영어로 대화를 아주 잘 하시는 분이 이런 차이를 구분하는 목적은 충분히 의미가 있습니다. 하지만, 거의 영어로 말을 못하는 사람들이 이런 사소한 차이를 구분하기 위해서 시간을 낭비하는 모습을 보면 안타깝습니다.

영어 공부용으로 라라랜드는 보통인 수준입니다. 일반적으로 뮤지컬 영화는 발음이 정확하고 비교적 한마디씩 알아듣기 쉽게 말하는 경향이 있습니다. 하지만, 이 영화는 일상 대화는 천천히, 또박 또박하게 발음을 하는 편이나, 결정적 순간, 갈등 상황, 문제가 되는 장면, 그리고 중대한 내용을 담고 있을 때는 아주 작은 소리로 빠르게 말하고 있습니다. 예를 들면, 미아가 남자친구를 부모님에게 돈을 잘 버는 사람인지 소개하는 전화 통화 소리는 모깃소리입니다. 그리고, 미아가 연극을 혼자 다 마치고 나서, 쉬는 동안, 무대 장치를 담당하고 있던 사람들의 비난 소리는 거의 들리지도 않습니다. 사실 이런 상황을 이해하지 못한다면, 아무리 영화를 잘 이해한다고 하더라도 결국에 무슨 내용인지 알 수 없게 되는 이유입니다.
