1. 처음 2번은 영어 문장만 보여줍니다.
- 영어 문장만 듣고, 어떤 내용인지 생각하는 훈련을 합니다.
2. 교육부에서 지정한 중. 고등학생용 이상 영단어에는 개별 단어 뜻을 보여줍니다.
- 한국어로 표시된 단어 뜻을 보면서 영어 문장의 뜻을 파악하는 훈련을 합니다.
3. 마지막에 한국어 해설을 보여줍니다.

It was New Year's Eve and dreadfully cold.
이날은 새해 전날로 너무나 추웠습니다.
The snow fell quickly in the darkening light as evening came on.
저녁이 깊어가면서, 눈은 희미한 불빛 속으로 빠르게 내렸습니다.
In the cold and the darkness, there walked along the street a poor little girl, bareheaded and with no shoes on.
추위와 어둠 속에서, 길을 따라, 맨머리, 맨발로 겉고 있는 불쌍한 아이 여자가 있었습니다.
When she left home she had slippers on, it is true, but they were much too large for her feet.
그녀가 집에서 나왔을 때에는 신발을 신고 있었으나, 정말이지, 신발은 그녀의 발에 너무나 컸습니다.
Her mother had used those slippers till then, but the poor little girl lost them running across the street when two carriages were passing quickly by.
평소에는 그녀 어머니가 신고 있었던 신발이었으나, 가여운 작은 소녀는 빠르게 달리던 마차 2개를 피해 길을 건너던 중에 잃어버렸다.
When she looked for them, one was not to be found, and a boy grabbed the other and ran away with it.
소녀가 신발을 찾아봤으나, 한쪽은 없어졌고, 다른 한쪽은 소년이 잡고 도망갔습니다.
So on the little girl went with her bare feet, that were red and blue with cold.
그래서 작은 소녀는 맨발이 되었고, 맨발은 추위로 붉고, 파랗게 변했습니다.
In an old apron that she wore she had bundles of matches and she also carried a bundle in her hand.
입고 있던 앞치마 속에 성냥 몇 다발이 있었으며 또한 그녀 손에 몇 다발을 가지고 다녔습니다.
No one had bought so much as a bunch all long day and no one had given her even a penny.
하루 종일 아무도 성냥을 사주지 않았으며, 동전 한 닢 조차 받지 못했습니다.
Poor little girl! Shivering with cold and hunger she crept along, feeling miserable.
가엾은 꼬마 아가씨! 추위와 배고픔에 몸을 떨며 그녀는 비참함을 느끼며 천천히 걸어갔습니다.
The snowflakes fell on her long hair, which hung in pretty curls about her neck, but she did not think of her beauty or of the cold.
눈송이는 목에 예쁜 곱슬곱슬하게 걸려 있는 그녀의 긴 머리 위에 떨어졌지만, 그녀의 아름다움이나 추위를 생각하지 않았습니다.
Lights shone from every window, and she could smell the beautiful smell of roast goose being cooked for New Year's Eve in all the houses.

She could not stop thinking about it.

In a corner between two houses, she sat down.

Besides, it was cold enough at home, as they had only a roof above them that was full of holes.

Little Match Girl sees through the wall into room inside
작은 성냥팔이 소녀는 벽을 통해서 방안을 들여다보았습니다.
Now her little hands were nearly frozen with cold.
이제 그녀의 작은 손은 추위로 거의 얼어 있었습니다.
She thought that maybe a match might warm her fingers if she lit it.
그녀는 성냥을 켜면 손가락이 따뜻해질지도 모른다고 생각했습니다.
So at last she drew one out. She struck it and how it blazed and burned!
그래서 마침내 그녀는 성냥 한 개를 뽑았습니다. 그녀는 성냥을 켰고 활활 불타올랐습니다.
It gave out a warm, bright flame like a little candle, as she held her hands over it.

A wonderful little light it was.

It really seemed to the little girl as if she sat in front of a great iron stove with a lovely fire inside it.

So nicely it burned that the little girl stretched out her feet to warm them. How comfortable she was!

But then the flame went out, the stove vanished, and nothing remained but the little burned match in her hand.
그러나 그때 불꽃이 꺼지고, 난로는 사라지고, 그녀의 손에 들려 있는 작은 불붙은 성냥개비 외에는 아무것도 남아 있지 않았습니다.
She rubbed another match against the wall.
그녀는 벽에 또 다른 성냥을 문질렀습니다.
It burned brightly, and where the light fell on the wall she could suddenly see right through it into the room.
그것은 밝게 타올랐고, 불빛이 벽에 비친 곳으로부터 그녀는 방안을 확실히 볼 수 있었습니다.
A snow-white cloth was spread upon the table, on which were laid beautiful china plates, while a stuffed roast goose cooked away and made a most delicious smell.
눈처럼 하얀 천이 테이블 위에 펼쳐져 있었는데, 테이블 위에는 아름다운 도자기 접시가 놓여 있었고, 속이 꽉 찬 구운 거위 요리는 최고로 맛있는 냄새를 풍겼습니다.
And what was more delightful still, and wonderful, the goose jumped from the dish, with knife and fork still in its breast, and waddled along the floor straight towards the little girl.

But the match went out then, and nothing was left to her but the thick, damp wall.

Hundreds of candles were burning on the green branches, and little painted figures, like she had seen in shop windows, looked down on her.

The child stretched out her hands to them, but then the match went out.

"Now some one is dying," murmured the child softly, for her grandmother, the person who had loved her the most, and who was now dead, had told her that whenever a star falls a soul goes up to heaven.

She struck yet another match against the wall. It lit and in its brightness her dear old grandmother appeared before her, beaming love and kindness.
그녀는 벽에 또 다른 성냥을 켰습니다. 불이 켜졌고 빛 속에 그녀의 사랑하는 할머니가 사랑과 친절함을 보이면서 그녀 앞에 나타났습니다.
Oh, grandmother," cried the child, "take me with you.
아, 할머니! 아이가 외쳤다. "저를 데리고 가주세요. "
I know you will go away when the match burns out.
성냥이 다 타버리면 할머니가 사라질 것을 전 알아요.
"You, too, will vanish, like the warm stove, the splendid New Year's feast, the beautiful Christmas tree."
할머니도 따뜻했던 난로, 화려했던 새해 잔치, 아름다웠던 크리스마스트리처럼 사라질 거야."
And to make sure her grandmother would not disappear, she lit a whole bundle of the matches against the wall.
그리고 할머니가 사라지지 않도록 하기 위해 성냥 다발을 벽에다 대고 불을 붙였습니다.
And they burned with such a brilliant light that it became brighter than the midday sun.
그리고 성냥은 한낮의 태양보다 더 밝아질 정도로 찬란한 빛으로 타올랐습니다.
Her grandmother had never looked so grand and beautiful.
그녀의 할머니는 그렇게 장엄하고 아름다워 보인 적이 없었습니다.
She took the little girl in her arms and both flew joyfully together, climbing higher and higher, far above the earth, away from cold and hunger, to heaven.
할머니는 그 어린 소녀를 품에 안고 두 사람 다 함께 즐거운 듯이 날아오르며, 추위와 배고픔부터, 지구 위로 멀리, 천국으로 올라갔습니다.
They found her the next morning, leaning against the wall, with red cheeks and smiling mouth - frozen to death on the last evening of the old year.
사람들은 다음날 아침, 벽에 기댄 채, 붉은 뺨과 웃고 있는 - 작년 마지막 날 저녁에 얼어서 죽은 그녀를 발견했습니다.
"She wanted to warm herself, the poor little thing," people said.

"I wonder why she looks so happy?" some people asked. No one imagined what beautiful things she had seen, or how happily she had gone with her grandmother into the new year.
