2. 영화 감상평
너무나도 유명한 영화, 쇼생크 탈출. 공중파 TV로 수차례 방영되었기에 우리나라 많은 사람들이 이미 본 영화입니다. 그리고 저 또한 몇 본 기억이 있습니다. 하지만 IMDb에서 유저가 뽑은 No. 1에 이 영화가 있으리라고는 짐작하지 못했습니다.
영화로 영어공부를 하기 위해서, 다시 한 번 더 본 ‘쇼생크 탈출’은 영어 공부 이기보다는 인생 공부에 가까웠습니다.
영화의 주인공 Andy 옆에는 감옥의 만물상으로 불리는 Red라는 죄수가 있습니다. 이 영화는 Red의 눈을 통해서 감옥이라는 세상을 바라보고 있으며, Andy의 탈출을 묘사하고 있습니다. Red는 장기 복역수로 매년 가석방위원회에 가석방을 위한 면접을 보게 됩니다.
가석방위원회에서는 Red에게 다음과 같은 질문을 합니다.

하지만, 가석방위원회는 부결( rejected) 처리합니다. 감옥에서의 일상처럼 이렇게 같은 대화가 매년 반복됩니다.
쇼생크 감옥에서 인생의 대부분을 살던 브룩스는 나이 많은 할아버지 모범수입니다. 그런데 감옥을 떠날 수 있는 가석방 날이 다가오자 점차 이상한 행동을 하기 시작합니다. 감옥에 너무 익숙해져서 새로운 세상이 두려워진 것입니다. 보통 사람들에게 감옥은 지옥이지만, 이미 익숙해진 브룩스에게는 가장 편안한 곳입니다. 결국 브룩스는 그곳에서 나오게 되고, 우리가 자유롭다고 말하는 세상에서 자살을 선택합니다.

반면에 무기형을 선고받은 Andy는 감옥에서 탈출할 계획을 가지고, Red로부터 작은 손 망치를 구합니다. 수감 중인 감방 벽을 조금씩 날마다 구멍을 내고 그 자리에 여배우 사진을 걸어 놓고 간수들을 속이고 있었습니다.
어느 날 감옥 소장은 Andy 감방을 불심검문하게 됩니다. 다행히도 Andy는 손망치를 성경책(Bible) 속에 숨겨 놓았기에 발각을 모면합니다. 감옥 소장은 성경책 속은 살펴보지 않고 Andy에게 성경책을 되돌려 주면서 다음과 같이 Andy에게 이야기합니다.

이 사건 뒤에 Andy는 은행에서 배운 기술을 이용해서 간수들의 재산 증식을 도와줍니다. 단순히 세금 절세부터 시작해서 소장의 돈 세탁까지 도와주게 되자, 간수들에게 Andy는 꼭 필요한 사람이 됩니다. 동시에 자신들의 금융 범죄를 알고 있기 때문에 Andy는 본의 아니게 감옥에서 나갈 수 없는 상황에 빠져듭니다.
그러던 도중에 Andy 자신의 무죄를 입증할 수 있는 기회를 갖게 됩니다. 바로 신입 죄수 중 한 명이 우연히 실제 Andy의 wife를 살해한 살인범이 누군지 알고 있습니다. 하지만, 자신의 이권을 지키기 위해서 Andy의 도움이 계속 필요한 감옥 소장은 이 젊은 죄수를 무참히 살해합니다.

이 사건을 계기로 Andy는 다시 절망에 빠져듭니다. 마치 모든 희망을 잃고 자살할 사람처럼 Red에게 밧줄은 구해달라고 합니다. 하지만 어느 날 아침 그는 감옥에서 바람처럼 사라졌습니다. 자유를 찾아서 탈출에 성공합니다. 그리고 감옥 소장의 검은 돈을 훔치고, 그들의 죄를 모두 신문사에 알려 복수를 합니다. 감옥 소장은 결국 자살을 선택합니다. 이것으로 Andy의 쇼생크 escape는 끝이 납니다. 하지만 쇼생크 Redemption은 끝나지 않았습니다.
매년 레드는 가석방 심사 위원회에 참석하게 됩니다. 심사관 앞에서 레드는 앵무새처럼 같은 말을 반복합니다. 이제 자신의 죄를 후회하고 있으며, 세상에서 착한 시민으로 살 준비가 되어있다고 말을 합니다. 하지만 심사관들은 가석방 심사 부결합니다. 매년 반복되는 형식적인 행사처럼 심사관 앞에서 같은 말을 하고 가석방은 부결됩니다. 브룩스의 자살과 앤디의 탈출 이후 레드는 더 이상 가석방 심사관 앞에서 같은 말을 반복하지 않고, 자신이 하고 싶은 말을 담담하게 합니다.

가석방 허가란 자유(Freedom)이 아니라 자살(suicide)을 의미하기 때문입니다. Red는 가석방 이후 슈퍼마켓에서 포장하는 직업을 구합니다.
그는 40년 동안 감옥에 있으면서 익숙해진 습관을 버리지 못합니다. 소변을 보러 가기 위해서 간수에게 허락을 받았던 것처럼 슈퍼마켓 매니저에게 허락을 받습니다.

드디어 Red는 Andy가 있는 곳, 멕시코로 향하는 버스, 구원의 버스를 탑니다. 그리고 마지막 독백을 합니다.

제목 ‘쇼생크의 탈출’은 적합한 번역이 아니라고 생각합니다. Redemption은 탈출보다는 구원을 뜻하는 단어입니다.
영화 속 주요 흐름은 은행원 앤디의 활약상에 맞추어 있습니다. 그의 무죄. 그리고 자유를 갈구하는 음악. 마지막 탈출까지. 하지만 앤디는 단순히 쇼생크를 탈출(prison break) 했을 뿐입니다. 그는 구원받지 않았습니다.
구원을 받은 사람은 바로 레드입니다. 가석방 중 레드는 브룩스와 같은 길을 갈 수밖에 없는 처지입니다. 하지만 앤디의 쪽지로 인해 자살할 수밖에 없는 세상으로부터, 자유로운 곳으로 구원되기 때문입니다. 그래서 제 개인적인 생각으로는 The Shawshank Redemption에 어울리는 한국어 제목은 ‘쇼생크 구원’이 아닐까 합니다.
이 영화는 영화를 보면서 얻을 수 있는 모든 것을 주고 있습니다. 아름다운 영상, 경험하기 힘든 타인의 인생, 의미 있는 대사, 잊을 수 없는 음악, 가슴 한편 이 뻥 뚫리는 감동, 그리고 재미까지 있습니다.
3. 영화에서 배울만한 영어 어휘
스크립트 12번에 나오는 rehabilitate은 마약, 범죄 영화나 드라마에 자주 등장합니다. rehab은 중독자 치료를 말합니다.
19번 in vain은 생각보다 자주 나오는 숙어이나, 짧게 발음되기 때문에 놓치기 쉽습니다. 25번 license-plate는 자동차 번호판을 뜻합니다.
45번 institutionalized는 제도에 익숙해진 상황을 묘사하는 단어입니다. '쇼생크 탈출' 영화감상에서 가장 중요한 단어 중 하나입니다. 한글 자막으로 보면서 크게 느끼지 못했지만, 영어자막을 사용하게 되면, 이런 점에서 원작의 의미를 좀 더 다가갈 수 있는 듯합니다.
58번 obtuse는 저는 처음 들어보는 단어입니다. 여튼 이 단어가 간수장을 화나게 합니다.
73번 severance pay는 퇴직금을 뜻합니다. sever이 자른다는 뜻이고 직장에서 잘리고 받는 급여 즉, 퇴직금을 뜻하는 모양입니다. pension은 연금으로 퇴직금과 약간 다릅니다. 우리나라에서 명예 퇴직(조기 퇴직)을 신청하게 되면 추가로 일정 액금을 회사로 부터 받습니다. 이것을 영어로 어떻게 표현하는지 아시나요?
약간 어렵고 생소한 단어들이 많이 있습니다. 억지로 외우지 마시고 눈에 익히고, 귀로 듣는 연습을 하시면 될 듯합니다.
