상원의원 후보자가 선거기간 중에 자신의 참모, 유능하나 매사에 참견하며 특히, 후보자에게 선거에 방해된다며 비밀 애인을 못 만나게 하자 앙심을 품고 살해합니다.
정치인 답게 살인을 하면서도 이것을 이용해 지지도를 끌어 올리고, 마지막까지 자신이 피해자인 척 합니다. 하지만 콜롬보는 사건의 핵심을 간파하고 진짜 살인범을 밝혀냅니다.
