한국 6.25 전쟁영웅이 퇴역한 후 건설회사를 운영 하면서 군납 비리로 돈을 벌었으나, 그 비리가 드러나려 하자 자신의 동료, 현역 군인을 살해한다. 이 살해장면을 목격한 여성의 진술이 자꾸만 변해가고 콜롬보는 물증확보에 어려움을 겪는다. 너무 뻔한 스토리로 내용은 다소 식상하다.
우리가 사막에서 본다는 신기루를 mirage라고 하나보다. 나는 이때 처음 알게 된 어휘다. 퇴역장성이 살해범이라 cavalry, regiment, brigadier general, ammunition 같은 군대 용어가 많이 나온다. 사실 한국에서 살면서 일상생활에서 영어로 위와 같은 용어를 접할 수 있는 기회는 아주 작다. 그러나 미국 일상 생활에서는 당연히 대화에서 쓰이는 용어다. 이런 부분이 학습하기 어렵다. 우리에게는 낮 설지만 미국사람들에게는 일상인 단어들. 이런 단어를 외울 필요는 없지만 그래도 반복해서 익혀두어야 나중에 듣고 짐작이라도 할 수 있다.
